Chapalain

A first underwater exposition, coordinated by the ADACUA, has been organised during the second turn of the AIDA' apnea french cup.

I spend a long time studying the shapes, proportions, characteristics of animals so I can reproduce them perfectly, respecting their morphology.

After studies in the school of "Beaux-Arts" in Rennes, Emmanuel Chapalain is creating sculptures made off recycled materials : engines, steel, camera objectives, aluminium...

After many years creating sculptures inspired by marine life, Emmanuel naturally decided to let their potential expand in their « natural space ».

Just imagine a mutation of this animal, like a response to human behaviour: the scales disappear for steel shielding plates, some engines are grafted in order to gain speed against boats, the eyes are replaced with lenses to sight their hunters.

The day this metamorphosis happens, I imagine the surprise of a trophy hunter, while he’s got at the end of his “high tech” line a “mechanical animal” as fast and frightening as a jet fighter.

I work the body with plates of aluminium, steel, inox or copper in order to recreate a plane’s fuselage or the captain Nemo’s submarine.

Next, I search my stock of old parts of planes, bikes, boat’s upperwork, car’s ornament.

Some animals are inordinately big, some species are weakened or are disappearing because of the man, frightening predator.

Avoid those piranhas !
